maison d'etre, a Georgie Award Finalist


vision & challenges:

  • design a penthouse Zen garden complete with water features channeling energy, stone elements for visual texture, levels for dimensionality, plants to soften lines and add colours, and fire for warmth and intimacy

design solutions:

  • installed black soapstone to provide strong neutral anchor and continuity, offset and softened by harmonious blend of river rocks, wood elements and water
  • constructed pergola using dovetail, and mortise and tenon joinery; constructed in cube form and counterbalanced with base to prevent lifting during adverse weather
  • installed retractable awning above seating area to provide protection from elements and visual space definition
  • installed LED lights, low voltage accent lighting to feature elements of pond and waterfall
  • utilized L–shape of pond to connect and separate dining, sunning, relaxing spaces
  • planted drought resistant shrubbery with drip irrigation system to conserve water
